STATE OF WAR: Large-Scale Hostilities Erupt Along the Durand Line

ISLAMABAD/KABUL — The long-simmering tensions between Pakistan and the Afghan Taliban have escalated into a state of open conflict. Following a series of cross-border skirmishes and a formal declaration of “retaliatory offensive operations” by Kabul, military observers and ground reports confirm that a large-scale war has officially commenced along the 2,640km Durand Line.

The Catalyst of Conflict

The transition from border friction to official warfare follows a week of intense diplomatic breakdown. Early on February 26, the Afghan Ministry of Defense announced a shift from defensive posturing to “active offensive maneuvers,” citing recent Pakistani airstrikes as the primary cause. By late evening, these threats materialized into synchronized assaults on several Pakistani border outposts.

Land and Air: The Current Battleground

The conflict is currently concentrated in three primary sectors:

  1. Khost & Paktia: Heavy artillery exchanges and ground incursions have been reported, with both sides utilizing medium and heavy weaponry.
  2. The Khyber Pass: Movement of armored divisions has been sighted on the Pakistani side as reinforcements move toward the frontlines.
  3. The Air War: In a significant escalation, the Pakistan Air Force (PAF) has reportedly conducted precision strikes against insurgent launch sites inside Afghan territory to neutralize incoming fire.

National Response

The Government of Pakistan has placed all border districts on high alert. While official statements from the ISPR emphasize “territorial integrity” and “effective response,” the sheer scale of the troop movements suggests a prolonged military engagement.

In Afghanistan, the Taliban leadership has called for a “national mobilization,” signaling that they do not intend to back down despite the risk of a full-scale regional crisis.

Humanitarian Concerns

Thousands of civilians in the border districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan have begun moving toward safer inland areas. International monitors are calling for an immediate ceasefire, warning that a prolonged war could destabilize the entire South Asian region.
